Altus’ Maya Sanchez – Volleyball Spotlight Presented by Bar-S Foods

The sport of volleyball may be new to Altus, but thankfully senior Maya Sanchez isn’t new to the sport of volleyball.
“I played a little volleyball at a YMCA in Kansas,” Sanchez said. “I didn’t stick with it though, and played soccer until I moved to Altus. I love playing volleyball because of the little accomplishments. Sure, we may not have won as many games as we had hoped, but we had little victories within each set, play and practice.”
That positive attitude has led the defensive specialist to be a role model in her final year at Altus. She said that’s nothing new for her though, and she enjoys the opportunity to help lead others.
“I’ve been a section leader in the band since sophomore year,” she said. “One thing I’ve learned while being a role model to others is I have to be modest. Teaching others and being their friends, you can’t act like you’re better than them. I love being there for anybody, anytime. If they need rides, to rant, some motivation or help of any kind, I’m there.”
Sanchez also said the ability to play as a team is important, and she said she’s lucky to have teammates who push her to be better.
“Those of us in the back row motivate each other to be better,” she said. “When one of us is off the court, we tell each other how we could fix something if we mess up during the game. Having character doesn’t just have one word to describe it. It contains multiple, vibrant colors such as uniqueness, positivity, spirit and so much more.”
