Some high school student-athletes enjoy playing a sport, so they join the team. Others may become part of a team because they have played that sport since they were young. Devin Keel says that soccer is more than just a game that he plays.
“I do not just play soccer,” he said. “I live the game. I have played since I was young. I plan on going pro someday and my goal is to be termed as the best player in the world.”
Keel, a junior, plays soccer for the Clinton High School soccer team. He mainly plays the primary striker, but also plays the leftwing. Devin also plays club soccer with the Western Oklahoma Futbol Club.
Becoming the player that Devin is today has required a great deal of work and time. “There has been a lot of dedication, pain, and sacrifice in order for me to get to where I am today. But I have to keep putting in the work to get better.’
Two of Keel’s biggest role models are professional soccer players that are known around the world. “Neymar and Mbappe are awesome soccer players,” he said. “Neymar’s skills are unique and he makes a big difference on the field. Mbappe has great speed. He has reached so many accomplishments and he is only 21 years old.”
Devin has made a lot of great memories throughout his years playing soccer. He says that two of his favorite memories were postseason trips with his club team, WOFC. “In 2019, I was able to help my club team make it to Regionals in Round Rock, Texas,” he said. “The year before, in 2018, we were invited by OKC Energy to South Carolina for Regionals. Both trips were really exciting and awesome experiences.”
Eugene Jefferson, Clinton soccer coach, says that Keel is a great player on the field and a great person off of it. “Devin is a very gifted athlete,” he said. “He has incredible skill and speed. As a person, he has a quiet confidence in himself.”
